Swift Staffing Solutions HR Files- Candidates

We have started a new segment allowing potential candidates AND hiring managers to ask questions that will be answered directly by our CEO, Darcy Swift.

QUESTION: I gave my notice and my boss said I didn’t follow their proper protocol so they will not be a reference for me moving forward, can they do this?

ANSWER: Since there is no legal obligation to provide a reference, your request can be denied by any past employer if they choose to do so. A standard notice when leaving a position is 2 weeks, however, if your employer has specific protocols, then you will want to educate yourself on those procedures and follow them if you know you will be asking for a reference. Remember, you don’t want to burn bridges. Any steps you take when giving your notice should be done with the upmost professionalism.
