DON’T GET GHOSTED: 5 Things Candidates Can do to Stay on a Recruiter’s Radar

DON’T GET GHOSTED 5 Things Candidates Can Do to Stay on a Recruiter’s Radar

Have you ever felt like you were ghosted by a hiring manager or recruiter? Here’s the scenario: You applied for the job. You had the conversation. Maybe you even had a great interview.

Then… crickets.

No call. No email. No update.

Getting ghosted during a job search is frustrating, but sometimes silence doesn’t mean you’re out of the running. Recruiters are managing multiple candidates, open positions, interviews, client communication, and constantly changing hiring timelines all at once. A candidate who stays engaged and communicates well is much easier to keep in mind when the right opportunity comes along.

At Swift Staffing Solutions, we want our candidates to understand something important: your recruiter isn’t just someone who calls you about one job. They can be a resource throughout your job search.

Here are five simple ways to stay on their radar.

1. RESPOND: EVEN IF THE ANSWER IS “NOT RIGHT NOW”

If a recruiter reaches out about a position and you’re not interested, don’t disappear.

A simple response like:

“Thank you for reaching out! I’m not looking to make a move right now, but I’d definitely like to stay in touch for future opportunities.”

That takes a few seconds and keeps the relationship open. Maybe the position they contacted you about isn’t right. Maybe the timing isn’t right. Or maybe you’re already working somewhere you like.

That’s okay! Let your recruiter know what would interest you. Are you looking for a certain type of position? A particular schedule? A specific location? A minimum pay range? The more your recruiter understands about what you’re looking for, the easier it is to contact you when something that actually fits comes across their desk.

2. FOLLOW UP: DON’T ASSUME SILENCE MEANS “NO”

If you meet with a Swift Staffing recruiter, we will tell you to make sure you are following up with us every week. We will not call each candidate every week for an update if there is nothing specific to tell you, however, if you call to let us know you are still available – we can give you an update at that point. You don’t have to wait around wondering what happened. We are happy to tell you where we are in the process at any point if you call and ask.

In the same light, if you applied for a position or interviewed and haven’t heard anything, a professional follow-up is completely appropriate.

Try something simple:

“Hello Hiring Manager, I wanted to follow up regarding the Medical Assistant position we discussed. I’m still very interested and wanted to see if there are any updates on the position. Please let me know if you need anything else from me!”

That’s it. You don’t need a three-paragraph explanation. You don’t need to send five messages in one week (in fact, it’s probably better if you don’t). One thoughtful follow-up can be much more effective than disappearing completely. It puts you at the forefront of their mind and expresses you are genuinely interested in the position.

3. KEEP YOUR RECRUITER UPDATED

Things change quickly during a job search.

Maybe you started a new job.
Maybe you got a new certification.
Maybe your availability changed.
Maybe you’ve decided you’re only interested in certain schedules.
Maybe you are now willing to commute farther than you were before.

Tell your recruiter.

Don’t assume they automatically know. A quick update gives your recruiter current information and can prevent missed opportunities. It also means that when a position comes up, they aren’t working with an outdated picture of what you’re looking for.

And if you’re no longer looking for a job, let them know that, too.

4. BE EASY TO REACH

This one sounds obvious, but it matters.

If your recruiter calls, texts, or emails about a position and you don’t respond for several days, the opportunity may have already moved forward. That doesn’t mean you have to answer your phone every second of the day. But if you’re actively looking for work, make communication a priority.

Check your voicemail.
Return calls.
Watch your email.
Respond to texts.
Let your recruiter know if you will be unavailable.

And if you miss an interview or need to reschedule, communicate as soon as possible.

A no-call/no-show doesn’t just affect one interview. It can affect whether a recruiter feels comfortable presenting you for future opportunities.

Fun Fact: Employers are looking for reliability. MOST will not reschedule an interview if you no call/no show or cancel last second. If something happens and you need to reschedule, make sure you communicate that as early as possible so hiring manager have time to adjust their schedules.

5. DON’T DISAPPEAR AFTER A “NO”

Not getting one particular job doesn’t mean your relationship with the recruiter has to end. Hiring decisions aren’t always a reflection of your qualifications. Sometimes another candidate has experience that more closely matches what the employer needs or is just a better fit overall with the team in that facility. Sometimes the position is put on hold. Sometimes the employer changes its plans entirely. If a position doesn’t work out, don’t burn the bridge.

A simple: “Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate the opportunity and would definitely like to be considered for future positions that might be a better fit.” can keep the door open.

Today’s “no” could simply mean “not this position.”

If you’re working with Swift Staffing Solutions, there is a good chance that we already have another position in mind for you and working to get you in front of that manager. If you disappear, we can’t help move your job search forward past that first interview.

THE GHOSTLY TRUTH

Staying on a recruiter’s radar doesn’t mean constantly calling, texting, or asking, “Do you have anything yet?” It means being responsive, professional, communicative, and honest about what you’re looking for. Recruiters remember candidates who make communication easy. So don’t sit around waiting for the phone to ring.

Stay connected. Stay responsive. Stay on the radar.

And if you’re working with Swift Staffing Solutions, remember we’re here to help you find the right opportunity, not just any opportunity.
