Swift Staffing Solutions HR Files- Employers

We have started a new segment allowing hiring managers a to ask questions that will be answered directly by our CEO, Darcy Swift. Our first question is:

QUESTION: I was told that when interviewing candidates, I’m not allowed to ask if they have the personal means to get to work every day (babysitter, running car, etc.). But that is a legitimate concern when I’m filling a position! How do I find out this information without asking?

ANSWER: It’s true, due to discrimination laws, you can’t ask specifics on how someone can or will get to work. However, there is always a way to get the information you need without asking the discriminating questions. Instead of asking if they will have a babysitter or running car, explain to your candidate the requirements of the job (time they should arrive every day, dress code, etc.) then ask if there is any reason they might not be able to fulfill these requirements. This allows them to offer up any complications they may have (they take kids to school at 8am, conflicting bus schedule, etc.).
