Swift Staffing HR Files – Handling Jobs without Growth Opportunities

We have started a segment allowing potential candidates to ask questions that will be answered directly by our CEO, Darcy Swift. This month’s question is:

QUESTION: I started a job with a company I was really excited to be apart of. The job I took is an entry level position. I love the company and the people so much and looked more at the long-term growth opportunities when accepting. I have been here almost a year and was told that there would be little to no movement as far as growth where my position is concerned. Now I don’t know what to do. I love where I work, but I want the opportunity to grow in my career. Should I wait and see if they change their minds or start looking for another path?

ANSWER: When dealing with a position with no growth opportunities, the answer really depends on what works best for you and your family. Communicate with your employer that you are very interested in moving forward in your career, but definitely do not assume they will change their minds. You don’t wan to build false hope and even more disappointment in the long run. Take the no as a no, and figure out your next steps. If you like the position and the company then happiness may be more important than growth. If that is the case, then I would say to stay.

However, if career growth is really important to you then you may want to check out the market to see what is available for you. During this time, many businesses are out of sorts; having employees work from home, changing business hours and even laying employees off. If you have a steady job that makes you happy, I suggest keeping it until the market picks back up. Take this time to look into other opportunities that may help your career. Whether that be a certification, class or networking connection. Do your research, create a plan and act when the time is right.
