Swift Staffing Solutions HR Files – Requiring Resumes for Interns?

We have started a new segment allowing managers to ask questions that will be answered directly by our CEO, Darcy Swift. This month’s question is:

QUESTION: Should my company require resumes for incoming interns that work for school credit and not compensation? Our company has never had interns but we have recently started interviewing for summer interns that will work for school credit. My boss thinks we need to have each one interview like they are applying for a permanent position and require that they submit a resume with their application. I think this is a bit much since they aren’t getting a W-2. What is the right protocol for this type of situation?

ANSWER: It really depends on the policies your company chooses to put in place regarding interns. Since this is a new situation for your company, now would be a good time to debate the issue since no set policies have been put in place. As a whole, I do not believe resumes are a requirement, however, I don’t disagree with this being a good policy. The benefit of being an intern is that you are able to get hands on experience in a company and in the real world. Since the whole point of an internship is to help them prepare for the employment world, a resume would only help with that. Personally, I favor requiring them to bring a resume upon time of interview. This could help you choose the right interns for your program as well as service as a learning opportunity for the ones applying.
