HR Files allows candidates to ask questions that will be answered directly by our CEO, Darcy Swift. This month we will be discussing How to address productivity issues with the boss.
QUESTION: My productivity is down because of my boss and I don’t know how to address it. We have a mandatory morning meeting every day that involves the owner of the company teaching business skills from whatever self-help book he is reading that week. While some of the information can be applied, I feel like they are largely a waste of time. Even if we have patients or clients waiting, we are required to attend this meeting and cannot leave until dismissed. It is starting to effect my job and the overall productivity of our office. How an I properly address this without getting in trouble or sounding out of line? He is the owner of the company, I feel like going against him puts my job at risk.
ANSWER: When the owner of the facility is the one causing the meetings to go long, you have to remember it is his/her company. If these meetings are starting to effect productivity in your job, you might consider going to your supervisor or HR representative to discuss the issue with them.
Perhaps a compromise can be agreed upon where employees can leave if they need to address a patient or client. However, you do not need to be the one to address the issue directly with the owner. Follow the chain of command within your office and let someone above you address it with the owner.
