Whether it is a brush up on skills or compliance training, you will hardly see an employee jump for joy at the thought of taking time out of their day for training. As a manager, it can be hard walking into a room knowing nobody wants to be there. Why not see this as a perfect opportunity to change their minds? There is no reason why your employees shouldn’t leave feeling happy and full of accomplishment after a training session. Below is 3 ways to effectively train your team.
Start with Team Building
The best way to get started with team building is to make sure that everyone is comfortable with each other. Often many employees are working from home or in another part of the office so they may not have the opportunity to get to know everyone well. Starting your training with a quick ice breaker team building activity will allow everyone to loosen up so they are able to comfortably obtain the information.
Create A Memory
Team training sessions do not have to be boring (read that again). In fact, the more fun you can make them, the more likely your team will remember the material. Emotional experiences create memories. Have some fun! Laugh! Get excited! Give out prizes. Even if you feel a little silly, I guarantee it will make for a funny conversation topic later. The best way to get material to stick is to make the experience memorable. Make it to where you team looks forward to training sessions. Create opportunities for the material you are teaching to be apart of a story so even when they are talking about what happened, they are also remembering why it happened.
Reward Accomplishments
Have an awards ceremony at the end of your training. Again, it may seem silly but people love to be recognized. Even if it’s for something that’s not “real”. If the training does not require a certificate, give it anyway. Make some up for each person on your team like, “Most Questions Asked”, “Most Correct Answers” or even “Best Training Snacks”, etc. Whatever it is that fits your team the best. Giving them recognition along with something tangible to leave with will help them remember the overall experience as well as the material given at the training.
Training can be fun and memorable. If you add a little bit of fun and excitement to your training with team building activities, games, jokes and/or prizes along with rewarding accomplishments your team will jump at the idea of having another training session. Open up opportunities for memories to be created so the material taught will connect on a long-term level.
