Work Week Hustle – How to Create Good Employee Retention

Work Week Hustle- How to create good employee retention

Having a quality team is that works well together and STAYS TOGETHER is the desire of every manager. However, how employees view the workplace has changed. In order to retain staff, it’s important for managers to understand the shift and respond to the new (but not so new) needs of their employees. Below we discuss how to create good employee retention in 2023.

Employee Needs

As managers and business owners, it can be stressful to run a team. We may have different career goals or point of views, but we all have the same basic needs. Food, clothing shelter, love, to be needed…. etc. Keeping this in mind when thinking about your team will help you properly define what your retention strategies will be.

Offering a competitive salary and benefits is great . Those are great for an initial hire, but doesn’t necessarily effect retention as much as one would think. Studies have shown that employees are far more likely to stay at a job where they feel respected and needed rather than over-paid and treated poorly.

Promoting Inclusion

A major factor in obtaining better employee retention is creating an environment of inclusion. If employees don’t LIKE being there then they likely will not stay long-term. Alternately, if employees feel excluded they tend to withdraw emotionally. People want to feel like they belong, especially in the workplace. Building a team with similar personalities will help with the company culture. As a managers it’s your job to cultivate an environment of kindness, purpose and connection for employees.

Open Door Policy

One of the main ways to create an environment of inclusion among your team is to start by example. Having an open door policy where employees feel welcome to come in and talk about ideas, issues, and concerns is the key to keeping great employees. An open door policy creates an atmosphere of trust between manager and employees; it also sets a standard among employees on how to treat one another within the work place.

Flexibility

One of the major shifts or employees in the workplace is a focus on creating work/life balance. Before many viewed work as the key and everything else was planned around it. In 2023, many employees are trying to fit their work into their lives instead of the other way around. This means they desire flexibility from managers. Understand that people have lives and families, not everything fits into a perfect puzzle.

One great way to ensure employee retention is to give some flexibility to their day. Even if you are unable to offer flexible hours or hybrid options, a little compassion goes a long way. Allowing an employee to take an extra long lunch for a personal reason or leave early to pick up a sick kid can make all the difference.

At the end of the day, employee retention relies on treating our employees well. Respect, compassion and flexibility will show your employees that you care for them as people, not just as workers. People stay when they enjoy their surroundings and feel cared for. Taking on the manager role with this in mind will strongly increase your employee retention.
