It’s the one thing every person fears, after all the job hunting, resume sending, calling and hoping… you FINALLY get the call back for an interview. But then the worst thing happens, you get sick! So what do you do? Should you power through and make the meeting? Or would it be better to call in to reschedule? In this weeks Work Week Hustle, we discuss ways to handle a job interview when you’re sick in the most professional way possible.
Let The Hiring Manager Be Your Guide
One common misconception among candidates is that going to an interview while sick will show initiative and further reflect on your willingness to work no matter what. While it is impressive to some, in most cases, that is not the case. Hiring managers are more worried about you getting them sick or compromising the health of their office than they are about you being able to power through a meeting.
Your safest bet is to call the hiring manager and let them determine what to do. That way you are allowing the hiring manager to make the call rather than surprising them with your illness when you get there. If the hiring manager determines that the interview cannot wait, then at least they are prepared for whatever illness may come their way.
Communication is Key
During this season, there are a lot of people battling illness. This does not mean that your chances at a great career opportunity are blown, you just need to remember to stay professional. As long as you keep a strong line of communication open with the hiring manager then everything can be worked out.
